What are the places that people got an impression of the happiest, least overworked residents?

Cedars-Sinai vs. Harbor-UCLA vs. UCLA-Olive View

Hey, how do these UCLA affiliates compare in terms of:

1. Clinical training
2. Reputation
3. Location
4. "Malignant" or not
5. Fellowship placement (particularly cards)
6. Anything else that would make one choose one over the other two.

Thanks. :)

Academic Salaries: Compensation Models

From what I've read on SDN and elsewhere online, salaries for academic physicians generally seem to be lower than what one might expect to earn in private practice (except for department heads, etc). However, looking at publicly available salary information for physicians at a large public university's health system, I've seen a huge range. For example, some doctors are making $120-$150k, while at the extreme other end of the spectrum, I found a gastroenterologist whose reported earnings...

How important is honors in rotations?

Hi, Im currently a 3rd year DO student and interested in matching into IM followed by fellowship in cardiology. My step 1 score is 243. However I found out this year that getting honors on rotation at my school is next to impossible and I didn't get honors in my IM rotation.

Im interested in mid-tier university programs for IM, being a DO student and without honors, how hard is it to match into these programs? Thanks for the answers!

Should I forget about IM (and other similar specialties) given my disabilities?

I really want to pursue IM, although the more I've talked to individuals about all it entails, the more I've realized this field in particular requires a lot of rounding/presenting. I know this happens in all fields of medicine, but it seems public speaking is a very large part of this field.

I have a mild stutter. I don't have a repetitive stutter, but I will sometimes speak with short breaks in my sentences as I struggle to get a certain word out. I had a couple of classmates mention...

I am curious as to how much does a resident make in a month after all deductions etc. I heard a resident say that he gets a paycheck of around $ 1800 after all deductions. His stipend is around $ 3700 pm.

Is pre-interview dinner a dealbreaker?

I have an interview at a place I really like this week, but it's two hours away from where I live and I can't afford any more hotel rooms for my interview season. Is it a dealbreaker to attend the pre-interview dinner? I would have to drive 2 hours to and from the hospital that evening, and then get up early in the morning and drive back the next day. I'd prefer not to do that but some threads on here seem to indicate pre-interview dinners are the "real" interview.

Hello All,
First time here. I graduated from Top 20 University based IM program 4.5 years ago. Currently doing my 5th year of J1 waiver job in an under-served area in hospital medicine. I am expecting my green card in next 6 months and seriously considering applying for a fellowship. Anyone out here knows any one or has heard of similar career pathways for people like me successfully getting back into academics after 5 year hiatus. Any response will be highly appreciated . My areas of...

What are the realities of fellowship hopping?

Somewhere on the interview trail I came across this strategy of getting into a competitive fellowship from not-so-competitive beginnings. I want to ask questions about this to see how realistic it is, and if anyone has done this intentionally.

The gist of it is this:
non-competitive residency -> uncompetitive fellowship in EXCELLENT institution -> competitive fellowship anywhere

It's not that I'm not a competitive applicant. I've interviewed at upper-mid tier university hospitals that...

How much house should you buy?

A question that pops up frequently lately I my life.
I have been having some differences with the wife as to how much house should we buy on our next move( first real job post fellowship) this coming June.
A financial advisor we talked to said for a salary of 380k a 600k mortgage is acceptable/top of limit and my wife grinned and gave that look( if you are married you know which one) and I felt like bitch slapping the guy.
Now I don't have any student loans and no debt( thanks mom!! )...

Low pass internal medicine - Can I still match at an academic program?

Hey guys. This is a repost - posted in the wrong forum originally.

Long story short - 3rd year who was afraid of doing poorly on IM rotation and became reality on my evals. Do I have a chance to match into an academic program somewhere and if so, where?

I've so far passed all of my 3 core rotations so far with this one being a low pass (<5-10% in my school get this grade, <1% get a marginal pass so this isn't the absolute lowest grade but is pretty much there). I originally wanted to...

Anyone familiar with this program? I hear they just recently merged, and will become a teaching hospital affiliated with the new Hofstra School of Medicine. They have 20 categorical + 20 prelim spots per yr. Surprisingly there were almost no FMGs even in the categorical program. Undergoing a lot of curriculum changes too

Hospitalist Long Term Career Options

For those who are non academic/community hospitalists, what are you current long term career plans?

Obviously, there are those who will remain as hospitalists as they like what they are doing. But what else are people planning on doing? I ask because I'm considering a career in hospital medicine and while I have even been a hospitalist before, the 2-4 nights a month and 50% of the weekends weren't bad in the first couple years out of residency, I imagine it will be much less appeasing in...
